Hi Mat,
Just back from Belize, and just wanted to say what an amazing time we had thanks.
It all went completely as you 'scripted', all the connections were good, and people met us where you said they would, the two guides you set up were both good at their jobs, slightly differrent approaches, which added to the experience of Permit hunting, on the flats, which was electrifying, seeing that black sickle fin sliding through the shallows.....
Saw a fair few permit and had more shots here than anywhere else I have been, and saw a fair few other species too, bones, jack crevalle, cuda, rainbow runners, and in blue water, tuna, dorado, kingfish, more cuda's... lots of fish !!
I cant wait to have my next adventure with you Mat, as everything was perfect, organised with the minimum of fuss my end, and seemlessly from yours, thank you.
Take care,best wishes.

Permit Season: Mexico and Belize fly fishing
We have had over 30 fly fishermen travel to Belize and Mexico over the past three weeks and it has resulted in a large number of permit captures for many first time saltwater flats fishermen. A total of 5 first time anglers have landed their first permit on their first ever saltwater fly fishing trip abroad, along with a host of other species.
A group of first time bonefishermen were led by Sean Clarke of Farlows, Pall Mall to Turneffe flats in Belize last week. The fishing proved challenging but also rewarding with bonefish to 6lb's being landed and also 2 permit coming to first time flats anglers Dorian Soanes and Jim Page. Their thoughts on the trip are below:
Mat,
As you can probably imagine it wasn't great waking up to minus temperatures this morning! Sad to be back as the trip was INCREDIBLE. Thanks all your help in arranging, Sean was a great host. The attached picture says it all.
Best of all my wife loved it, so much so we're already talking about the next one.

Hi Mat,
Great trip, excellent company, excellent fishing - lots to learn.
Plenty of luck with the Permit, but as the guide said `luck beats skill
everytime`.
All the best,
Jim

In Mexico the Paul Procter hosted trips have yielded over 14 permit and 5 grand slams over the past three weeks. The biggest permit came to first time flats angler Steve Grimes at a huge 25lb. Snook have also been in big numbers with many 15 lb plus fish landed. I will post up Mike Bilson's detailed report of week 2 which sums up a typical weeks fishing in Ascension Bay very well.

New Belize Destination: Hopkins
We are pleased to unveil our new Southern Belize destination. Hopkins village is located a 20 minute flight South of Belize city in the Stann Creek district. This small fishing village is located a short run to some of the world's most prolific permit flats. Combine this with the countless lagoons that tarpon make their home and the ever present bonefish and you find yourself in an ideal saltwater fly fishing location. This destination will be part of our hosted fly fishing packages will several hosted trips running in 2010. We have just had UK fly fishing writer Toby Coe head down to Belize and check out the place and here are his thoughts:
Mat,
All of my nonsense about 'not being particularly fussed about permit' turned out to be exactly that as soon as I got to Belize. Like probably every other flyfisher that has ever seen that big black tail waving in the air, I was an instant convert. Although a remarkably unsuccessful one. Due to sheer ineptitude on my part, I didn't land any permit during my three days of fishing with Jim, although I got a lot of shots. However, Jim did have a nice fish of around 7-8lb.
I was amazed by the number and size of permit we saw on the flats. On our best day, we probably saw 40-50 permit, including a couple of shoals of around a dozen fish. They weren't small either - Jim reckons the average size of permit down there is about 10-12lb and we saw some clonking fish, including a really nice fish in the mid-20s that gave me a severe case of buck fever.
Caught a few bones too and saw bonito and jacks smashing bait, plus a heap of tarpon, both out around the cays and also in the creeks and mangroves. The sheer variety of fishing in the area really has to be seen to be believed.
Jim's house is fantastic! Beautifully finished, very comfortable and right on the beach. There are some great local restaurants and bars nearby as well. Hopefully the attached pics will help give an idea of what it's like out there!
Cheers, Toby
