Fly fishing New Zealand: Owen river Lodge report

We have had a US client fishing out of Owen River Lodge earlier this week. With the South island having had a relatively dry summer some much needed rain arrived. This coincided with some high river levels in the Buller region but the team at Owen river lodge managed to put Glesson onto some great fish.

Our annual South Island hosted trip is coming up in the next two weeks. Really looking forward to being back on some of my favorite streams and sharing some fishing with clients that had been to New Zealand with us many times and showing New Zealand to some clients on their first ever visit. WIll also be great to catch up with New Zealand south island guides Steve Carey and Ian Cole who always show our clients a great time.

New Zealand Early Season Update

arly season reports are starting to come in from New Zealand. After a very wet early part of spring the weather settled through October. Unseasonably warm weather all through October and November has even got the cicadas chirping much earlier than normal. These trout proton pills don't usually become active until late January. The stable water levels should mean that by high summer fish should be in peak condition. Hopefully there is some rain through December to ensure that the river levels don't drop to low.

The guys at Owen River Lodge have been putting their clients onto some quality fish as can be seen by the images below.

For anyone interested in booking a last minute trip to New Zealand please don't hesitate to get in touch and we will provide you with upto date availability and local information on where's fishing best.

On Thursday the 2nd of September we are pleased to be hosting a New Zealand fly fishing day at Farlows, Pall Mall, London. This day is being supported by Tourism New Zealand, Poronui Station and Fly Odyssey and will be showcasing the finest brown trout fishery in the world.

New Zealand has long been regarded as the finest trout fishery in the world with its unlimited rivers, streams and lakes producing wild brown and rainbow trout that grow to large proportions. The country is filled with a vast richness of cultural and natural beauty and makes the perfect holiday destination for both the fly fisherman and non fisher.

In shop one of New Zealands premier fly fishing guides Ian Cole the principal fly fishing guide and FFF instructor at Wanaka fly fishing will be available to discuss tactics, flies and tackle for fly fishing in New Zealand. Ian's undoubtedly one of the best-qualified and experienced guides on the South island. He will be doing some fly tying demonstrations on how to tie the prime summer dryfly: the Cicada.

There will also be literature from Poronui Station and Owen River lodge, Tourism NZ and staff from Fly Odyssey available to discuss all aspects of travel around New Zealand.
